After moving in to our home three years ago, the garage is finally in a place that I’m excited enough to share as part of our home tour! The garage can tend to be a “drop zone,” for just about anything in our life, which can result in a DISASTER when it comes to organization and leaving room to park our cars. But when we my husband became motivated to get our garage under control, there was no stopping him, and the garage finally became “our project!”
Chamberlain MyQ Garage:
My only request for the garage project, was to have a Chamberlain MyQ Garage installed for our garage door opener, so we can open and close our garage doors from our phones, no matter where we are.
So many times, I find myself leaving home, half way down the block, thinking to myself:
Did I shut the garage door?
The more times than not, I’ve wasted precious minutes, turning around to double check… only to find that I did. If I would have just had my Chamberlain MyQ Garage, I would have been able to log in to my phone to check the status, to see if it’s open or closed.
Since putting this in, no more wasting time (especially when running late), turning around just to double check if I really did shut the garage door.
Chamberlain MyQ Garage Specs & Installation:
- MyQ Garage connects with your current garage door opener and uses your home’s WiFi network letting you secure and monitor your garage door from anywhere you are using the free MyQ App.
- The MyQ app is able to connect with other smart devices such as Nest Cam, Nest Thermostat, Xfinity Home, and MyQ Lighting allowing you to tune in to who is around the house or turn lights on/off when you are away from home.
- Easy Installation. 1. Mount Wi-fi hub next to your garage door opener and plug it in. 2. Mount the door sensor. 3. Download the free app and follow the instructions.
It literally only took us minutes to install the MyQ Garage, and has worked beautifully ever since. I just wish I would have thought to purchase this and install it 3 years ago.
Since my husband is a builder, he sees all of the new and upcoming tech gadgets way before I do, and the moment that he told me about this, I new it was a must have, and recommend it COMPLETELY!
Garage Flooring & Built-In Closets
After installing the MyQ Garage, I didn’t care too much about what my husband did with “his” garage. But I must say, I’m super pleased and happy with the results.
He has always loved having our garage floors polished with a toner, and I believe this garage floor turned out to be a favorite.
It began with prepping the floors, so they’d be ready to finish. We hired someone to come in and do this, rather than tackle it ourselves. (Mainly because we trust the professionals more than ourselves.)
We also had to move everything out for a day or so, so to our neighbors, it probably looked like we were having a pretty big yard sale. 🙂
(P.S. Here’s a little peek at my husbands tool box organization, that I put a little personal touch on, with my Silhouette Machine.)
Cedar Closets
Before we had the floors tackled, my husband had cedar closets built in the garage to store items like bikes, toys, deep freezer, etc. Oh how I love having those items tucked away, out of sight. A clean garage, is an extension of the home.
After using cedar to build the closets, they were stained to a color that would match the rest of the exterior of our home.
After prepping the floor, taping off the walls and closets, it was time to give it a bit of color.
You see those rectangular boxes hanging on the wall? Those are heaters, because in the winter time, my husband loves going out to the garage to work on different projects. (Ahem, or challenge someone in ping pong.)
We love how it turned out, and how it has a “glossy,” look to it. That is a protective coat, that we added. Now… I know what you’re thinking:
Is it slick when it gets wet?
…that was my first question too. Nope! They put a “concrete anti-slip treatment” on it, to prevent it from becoming too slippery when wet.
Do you know what the “woman,” in me said when I saw this color?
Oh goodness… will that show a lot of dirt?
You know what, it actually hides dirt better than it did before it was polished. BONUS!
I know the garage may not be as “glamorous,” as the rest of the rooms on a home tour, but I truly feel that by just a few updates or custom touches… the garage can be just another extension of the home!
For more ideas on garage organization, I gathered a few of my favorites here. Or to take a browse through the rest of our home, you can start here, at the beginning!

Ohhhh! If I could only clear out my garage. What type of heater did you use?
Fabulous,

Hi Karen! Thank you! You know, we had a local electrician purchase the heaters, and install them. But I did a quick google search, and found what they look like. I’ve never heard of this website, and not sure if it’s reputable. I just know that’s what our heaters “look” like, in the garage. I hope that helps! 🙂
