Wrapping Up Our New Home Construction {Part 1}

I’m so fortunate to be married to someone that is so talented in new home construction. We’ve been married for 5 years {together for 15}, and we’ve never built a home to call “ours.” We’ve always built a spec home, moved in, and moved out as soon as someone bought it. So to move in to a home that doesn’t have a “For Sale,” sign in the yard… well… I just don’t know what that will feel like!

Baby #2 is due any day, and we are down to the wire on this house. Normally, I wouldn’t care so much about how soon a house can be completed, but all of our baby items are in “storage,” waiting for this house to be completed. Eeeek… baby bottles, baby clothes, baby EVERYTHING! So… needless to say if this baby arrives before the house is move-in ready, we will be making a trip to Wal-Mart and Target, to bring baby home.

So why am I posting about our new home construction? Well, I’ve never felt like decorating a home, because I knew the minute I put something on the wall, I’d be forced to take it down. So I’m super anxious to get in our home, and begin decorating! I want to include you all in on the process, because while I’ll love decorating and organizing, I’ll probably have a lot of questions and want your opinions! {Hey… I’ve never done this before, remember?}  So here’s a peek and “Part 1” of our New Home Construction process. Follow along to see the progress and baby drama along the way! 🙂

Let’s start outside:

Front Side Walk

We decided to add a little “pizzazz” to our sidewalks and driveway. We selected a “Cobblestone” pattern with a tan underlay and dark brown overlay. {Are those even concrete terms? Yeah, I don’t know… I’m not in the construction business, but it sounds good to me! Lol} It looks like a “red” right now, but it will have the brown tones when the “stain” is applied.

We are also staining the front door a dark brown, that should match the rest of the outdoor finishes.

We have this sidewalk, leading from the driveway to our front door. Again, we kept the cobblestone pattern, and it will be stained the same colors as the other!

Driveway Border

I’m so anxious to see the driveway complete. What you see above are the “borders” of the driveway. In the gravel areas, concrete will be poured, and in the finished project, you’ll see strips of dark brown cobblestone. I can’t WAIT to see how it turns out!

Dining Room Cabinets & Buffet Station

Wrapping Up Our New Home Construction Part 1 Dining Room Cabinet Buffet

Ok, so we’re gonna peek at the inside a bit.

When we picked a house plan, the plan showed a dining room, and immediately said to my husband, “Honey, don’t you think a dining room is a waste of space?” He agreed. But about 2 months in to the building process, I began thinking that maybe it wouldn’t be such a waste of space. If we blocked off that room by adding walls, making it a bedroom or an office, it would drastically take away from the open floor plan that it had. So we decided to leave it a dining room, and now I’m ecstatic that we did! I started picturing family gatherings at my house, with an 8-person dining room table, and a wall of cabinets with a buffet serving station. If you know me, you know I LOVE to entertain, so I kind of made the dining room my little splurge. My husband picked out all of the finishes of the house {it’s what he does for a living, and he’s good at it}, so all I said was, “Honey, you know I don’t care what the house looks like, but I’d really love some cabinets with a buffet station in the dining room, and I’ll be over the moon!” Well he totally came through! You can see in the picture the base cabinets have been installed, and the granite countertops & above cabinets/bookshelves should be added this week!

Now… if I could just get the floors clean to see what that hardwood really looks like! 😉

Stone Fireplace

Wrapping Up Our New Home Construction Part 1 Fireplace Stone

In our family room, we have a fireplace in the corner, where our TV will hang, and my husband decided on a “stone” surround. I’m so glad, because it’s looking great!

Yep, that’s all for today. I have the moving company scheduled for the end of this week, so let’s hope Part 2 of this post, is a picture of my family standing in front of the front door, moving in! 😉

It looks great–and you so will not be sorry you have a dining room. You may not use it a ton, but when you do have large groups, it is a must!

    1. Jessica says:

Thank you Cindy! I can’t make a decision to save my life, so that’s why I’m so glad to have my husband that can pick it all out! Haha! I bet it feels like yesterday too, doesn’t it!? Thanks for stopping by!

  5. Beautiful stone work on the house and the fireplace! Hope you’ll post more pics as the construction and decorating commence!

    1. Jessica says:

Thank you! I will be posting more for sure!!! Thanks for stopping by!

  6. Is that stamped concrete in the driveway or actual stones/bricks? I’m jealous of folks with pretty driveways because in Michigan the freezing earth usually prevents any kind of embellishment!

    Everything looks so beautiful! Congrats.

    1. Jessica says:

Yes! It’s a “stamped” concrete! Aw man, that stinks! It’s not completely popular back here to do “extras” in the concrete, but it’s starting to make a rise in the area! Thank you!!!

  7. Nicole Copeland says:

    OMG your house is BEAUTIFUL!!!

    1. Jessica says:

Thank you Nicole! I’m so very excited to get in to it!!

  8. Wow, what an exciting time in life, new baby and new home! And it is a gorgeous home. I like all of that stone as well. Natural materials just have such a soothing feel to them. Can’t wait to see when it is done and when your new bundle is here!

    1. Jessica says:

Thank you! I’ll be posting a lot with the house as we move in and get organized, and I’m sure there will be posts on how to deal with having a new baby and moving at the same time! Haha! Thanks so much!

  9. Nancy Camden says:

Girl, I hope the moving van gets there before baby #2! You’re cutting it close!

Will you have an office in the new house?

    1. Jessica says:

Haha! I’m tellin’ ya! I think we live life by “cutting it close.” I wouldn’t know what to do with myself if we did things way in advance. Lol! Yes Mam! I can’t wait! The walls are full of windows, and I have a new craft table going in! Can’t wait to blog about the office!!!

  10. Missy Homemaker says:

How exciting to be building your own ‘stay in and live’ home! The fireplace is gorgeous-I love the stacked stone.

    1. Jessica says:

Thank you! I can’t wait to cuddle in front of it, when the first snow hits! {Ewww.. did I just say “snow!?” Yuck! I’m not ready for winter just yet!} 🙂

  11. Kim @ Curtain Queen Creates says:

Jessica, your new home is beautiful! How blessed (and busy!) you are having a baby while trying to move into your home. Even more special since it’s truly your first space to “make your own”. I look forward to your future posts about your home/baby/family/moving, and I’ll pray for you some extra energy with those sleep deprived nights ahead. Congratulations on both baby and new house!

What color stain did you use on the exterior cedar shakes on your house? I love that color!!

    1. Jessica says:

Hi Gwynn! Thank you so much! I just asked my husband and he said it’s “Sable Brown.” I hope that helps! 🙂

  13. Cindi says:

what is the color of the siding and what brand?

    1. Jessica says:

Hi Cindi! It’s James Hardie siding and we can’t quite remember what color it is, so I’d hate to guess… but their website has a ton of colors to browse from and you may find one there similar that you like! I hope that helps!
