This hot fudge sauce recipe is rich, smooth, and made with simple pantry ingredients. It's an easy homemade chocolate sauce that comes together on the stovetop in minutes, just as lovely as this Vanilla Sauce recipe.

A No-Fuss Dessert Sauce That Always Hits

This is the kind of recipe you make once and never need another version again. It's simple, reliable, uses only a few ingredients, and has that old-fashioned flavor that feels like something you'd find in a church cookbook or at a family gathering. No complicated steps, no special tools, just a creamy chocolate sauce that turns any scoop of ice cream into something extra special.

    FAQs

Can I store homemade hot fudge sauce?

Yes. Store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week.

How do I reheat hot fudge sauce?

Warm it in the microwave in short intervals, stirring in between, or heat it gently on the stovetop until smooth.

Does hot fudge sauce thicken as it cools?

Yes. It will thicken quite a bit as it cools, which is exactly what gives it that classic hot fudge texture.

Can I freeze hot fudge sauce?

You can, but the texture may change slightly after thawing. For best results, store in the refrigerator and use within a week.

What's the difference between chocolate sauce and hot fudge?

Hot fudge is thicker and richer, while chocolate sauce is usually thinner and more pourable.

    Ingredients

See the recipe card below that has the printable, full ingredient list and instructions.

Ingredients to make hot fudge sauce on counter.
    • ½ cup butter - Adds richness and helps create that smooth, creamy texture
    • 1 cup chocolate chips - The base chocolate flavor that melts into the sauce. I have used milk chocolate and semi-sweet, and have even combined the two and each time it works out great. I’ve also used chocolate chunks. The key for the best hot fudge is to use quality chocolate.
    • 2 cups powdered sugar - Sweetens the sauce and helps give it that classic fudge consistency
    • 12 ounces evaporated milk - Makes the sauce silky and helps everything blend together

    Instructions

    • In a medium saucepan, combine butter, chocolate chips, powdered sugar, and evaporated milk

    • Place over medium heat and stir constantly as everything melts together

    • Bring the mixture to a gentle boil
    • Continue cooking and stirring for 8 to 10 minutes until thickened
    • Remove from heat and allow it to cool slightly

    • Serve warm over ice cream or your favorite dessert, like I did with this chocolate chip cookie pie…

    Tips

    • Stir constantly to prevent the chocolate from scorching
    • Don't rush the boiling step, this is what thickens the sauce
    • If it gets too thick after cooling, just reheat and stir until smooth
    • Use good-quality chocolate chips for the best flavor

What to Serve Hot Fudge Sauce With

    • Breakfast Recipes – These chocolate waffles and Oreo pancakes are perfectly paired with hot chocolate fudge sauce.
    • Cakes – Drizzle this hot fudge on top of vanilla mug cake, Oreo mug cake, or this Milky Way cake for extra chocolate love.
    • Pies – Peanut Butter Pie and Turtle Pie are classic flavors that are elevated when topped with hot fudge sauce.
