Ingredients for Air Fryer Apple Chips
You only need 3 ingredients for these apple chips.
- Apples
- Cinnamon
- Nonstick cooking spray
That’s it! You could even skip the cinnamon if you don’t have it on hand.
Best Apples to Use for Apple Chips
You can use any type of apple to make apple chips but I have a few favorites that are perfect for this recipe.
You definitely want to choose a variety of apple that is super flavorful since it’s the star of the recipe.
If you’re looking for a tart apple chip with some sweetness from the cinnamon, granny smith apples are going to be a great option.
If you want something on the sweeter side, Honeycrisp apples are my personal favorite. Gala and Fujis are also delicious options.
What Size of Apples?
Another important factor to consider when choosing your apple is the size. Make sure to pick large apples. The apples shrink considerably when they are in the air fryer so the large the apple slice is the better chip you’ll end up with.
How to Prepare Your Apples
Start by washing and drying a large apple. Thinly slice the apple. I like to use a mandolin to ensure the slices are super thin.
If you don’t own a mandolin, use a super-sharp knife to cut slices as thinly as you can. This is important because they need to be thin in order to crisp up perfectly.
Lay the apple slices out in a single layer and pat dry with a paper towel. This is another step in ensuring they get super crispy.
How to Air Fry the Apples
Spray the first side of the apples with nonstick cooking spray then add to a large bowl. Toss around and give them another spray.
Sprinkle with the cinnamon and stir until they are coated evenly.
Place the apple slices in your air fryer in an even layer. These apple chips will take a few batches to cook.
Air fry at 350 degrees F for 6 to 7 minutes. The time will depend on the thickness of the apple slices. Make sure to pause the fryer and shake the basket every two minutes.
How Do I Know They Are Done?
You’ll want your apple chips to be a deep golden color. If they start to turn too brown they will taste burnt so make sure to keep a close eye on them during the last few minutes of cooking.
When you first remove the apple chips they will not feel super crispy but don’t worry! As they cool, the apple chips will fully crisp and be totally perfect.
How to Store Air Fryer Apple Chips
When you remove the apple chips from the air fryer, let them cool completely in a single layer. Once cooled, store them in an airtight container.
If you’re not eating them right away, make sure to store them right away to ensure they don’t lose their crispiness.
