This easy pound cake recipe is made with a few everyday ingredients to make this classic, vintage dessert a favorite to serve during the holidays or for potlucks.
Serve this cake alone as it is or top with the included glaze recipe, your favorite toppings, or choose from the list of ideas that I’ve given below! One of my favorites is drizzling on some homemade vanilla sauce that I also use on my bread pudding recipe.
Why You’ll Love This Cake Recipe
Ease: We’re all about “easy recipes” around here, and when you use that phrase in front of a word like easy cake recipes, you know you’re in the right place.
Flexible: With a classic cake like this one, it means that you can serve it alone or elevate it with your favorite toppings.
Texture: Pound cake can be a “spongey” texture, and more dense than say, an angel food cake.
Vintage recipe: I love the vintage classic recipes. You really can’t go wrong with grandma’s favorites. You’ll also love this vintage peanut brittle recipe and this egg custard recipe that my grandma shared with me.
Ingredients
Here are a few notes about some of the ingredients you’ll need for this cake recipe. You can also jump to the recipe card below for a full list of ingredients.
Jump to Recipe- Eggs and egg yolks: Plan on needing a total of 7 eggs for this recipe, although you’ll just be using 3 of them for the yolks. Use the leftover egg whites for this lemon meringue!
- Cake flour: I recommend using cake flour in this recipe. However, I know that it may not be something that you always have on hand. So if you only have all-purpose flour, you can measure out two cups of flour and remove 4 tablespoons and put it back in your flour container. Replace the removed 4 tablespoons of flour with 4 tablespoons of cornstarch.
Pound Cake Flavor + Topping Ideas
What I love about a pound cake, is that you can flavor it or top it with just about anything to customize the flavor you’re looking for, or leave it plain and capture the buttery-sugary goodness.
- glaze (like this recipe)
- fresh fruit
- crunchy items (like cookies, nuts, graham crackers, etc.)
- icing
- sugars
How to Make Pound Cake
You can find the full recipe card below, but I love to show the process in images as well in case you’re a visual person like me!
…………………………….
You’ll start by mixing together the butter and the sugar for about 3 minutes. (Why do almost all good dessert recipes start with butter & sugar?!?!)
Then, add in the eggs, yolks, and vanilla and mix for about 5 minutes.
Next, in a separate bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
Reduce mixer speed to low, and add half of the flour mixture and half the milk to the butter/sugar mixture, and mix for 5 minutes.
Add the second half of flour mixture and milk… and mix for 5 minutes.
Grease and flour your bundt pan (or pan of your choosing) pour in the batter, and smooth out any bubbles!
Place the pan in a cool oven and set the temperature to 350℉ and bake for 1 hour.
The cake will be done when a toothpick inserted into the cake comes out clean!
Allow 30 minutes for the cake to cool, and then remove from the pan (using a butter knife around the edges help) and turn upside down to finish cooling.
You’ll want the cake fully cooled before drizzling the glaze.
Pound Cake Glaze
The glaze for your pound cake is really, really simple. Although the buttery goodness of a pound cake it plenty, the glaze adds a delicious touch and smooth, creamy, silky texture.
For the glaze, you’ll need:
- 1 ¾ cup of confectioners sugar
- 4 tablespoons of whole milk
Simply add powdered sugar (confectioners sugar) to a bowl, and add 1 tablespoon of milk to the sugar at a time, stirring it in until smooth.
Drizzle over your cooled cake and serve! (If the cake is still hot, the glaze will melt in to the cake, which is still delicious but you won’t be able to see it as much.)
Doesn’t that look amazingly scrumptious? I’m not sure if there’s anything better than the classics.
