Why you’ll love these
Sometimes a peanut butter sandwich is just the sweet treat we crave. But when you can add a simple ingredient to uplevel this popular sandwich, why not!?
We absolutely love adding small changes to common recipes to keep things fun and exciting! Like when we made fried peanut butter and jelly sandwiches or even when we made donut burgers!

Ingredients
As I’m sure you can guess, it doesn’t take much, or any surprising ingredients to make this peanut butter and syrup sandwich!
So what does it take?
- ¼ cup peanut butter
- 1 tablespoon syrup
- 2 slices of bread (we prefer white bread)
Or double the ingredients and make a thicker sandwich, closer to what you see here in the photos!
Instructions
I know it sounds simple to make a peanut butter sandwich but if you missed “how to make a peanut butter and jelly the right way” you may want to see our favorite “trick” so we don’t rip the bread! It has been really fun to hear how you all make your pb&j’s too!
- We like to combine the peanut butter and the syrup in a small bowl before spreading on to the bread. But of course you can just spread the peanut butter on and then drizzle maple syrup on top of the peanut butter if you prefer.
- When you’re ready to serve the sandwiches (making them too soon and leaving them out can cause your bread to get stale) spread the peanut butter and syrup mixture on to one slice of bread.
- Then, simply top with another slice of bread and it’s ready to eat or serve along side your favorite soup!
Substitutions
If you’re not a fan of peanut butter or syrup, here are sub substitutions (like other nut butters) you can experiment with to see if you like that more:
- Honey – this can be used instead of syrup which will still give it a sweetness you’re looking for!
- Chocolate Syrup
- Caramel Syrup
- Almond Butter
- Nutella – We absolutely loving using Nutella on our favorite things like on these Nutella sugar cookies!
- Cashew Butter
- Seed Butter – you may be able to find a pumpkin seed butter or even a sunflower butter to use instead of peanut butter.
Variations
Want to do a little more on your peanut butter and syrup sandwiches? Here are some fun ideas to add to it:
- Spicy – add some chili pepper
- Crunch – crushed potato chips, crushed nuts, coconut flakes
- Sweet – marshmallows (like we added to this marshmallow pb& j) or mashmallow fluff
- Jelly – Add your favorite jelly or jam (For instance: orange marmalade, grape jelly, strawberry jelly)
- Cook sandwiches – instead of eating the sandwiches room temperature, you can cook them over medium heat (like you do in this chicken grilled cheese) and once golden brown, serve! The melty peanut butter, combined with the now warm syrup just may be the best way to consume this sandwich!
What to serve with peanut butter sandwich
Usually, the peanut butter sandwich is served alongside a main course but it can definitely be the hero of a meal with its own side dishes! For instance, the sweet potato fries would pair perfectly, a handful of potato chips or get in some veggies with green beans!

YouTuber and fellow inline skating enthusiast Polly Morris (also a certified skating instructor) told me that peanut butter, banana and maple syrup is her favorite sandwich in the comments section on a video of hers about the pros and cons of using a heel brake on inline skates. After mentioning that some speed skates can be fitted with aftermarket heel brakes, along with a few different examples of some of the scenarios in which a heel brake comes in handy, I brought up how I often get hungry after a long endurance workout on my Rollerblade Macroblade 110 3WD skates, and that I was having my favorite post-workout meal – a peanut butter, honey, banana and jelly sandwich – while typing my comment on said video. She said that my sandwich sounded delicious and told me that peanut butter, banana and maple syrup is her favorite.
And yes, I am eating a PBHBJ right now. I got to open a fresh loaf of a sugar-free wide-pan 100% whole wheat bread and a fresh jar of my favorite Jif Natural Creamy Peanut Butter for my yummy sandwich, along with my go-to raw and unfiltered wildflower honey, a ripe banana and natural Concord grape jelly, and it’s really hitting the spot. *takes a bite* Mmm, so good.
