This creamy, dreamy cookies and cream milkshake doesn’t require any special ingredients to make. All you need is ice cream, milk, vanilla, and Oreos and you can have this ready in 15 minutes!

    Cookies and Cream Milkshake
Cookies and cream milkshake – yum!

I’m a bona fide ice cream lover, (remember our ice cream sandwich cake?) and that means that I obviously love a classic Oreo milkshake that’s made with simple ingredients. This one totally satisfies my milkshake cravings!

Blend your favorite vanilla ice cream with some milk and vanilla extract, stir in some crushed Oreos and top it with your favorite toppings for a delicious homemade milkshake treat your whole family will love. (Possibly as much as they love these cookies and cream cinnamon rolls!)

    Why you’ll love this recipe

    1. Simple Ingredients: You don’t need any special order ingredients to make this milkshake. Just simple things you can find in any grocery store!
    2. Quick & Easy: This recipe comes together in less than 15 minutes and would be a great one to let the kids help you with.
    3. Cookies & Cream Flavor: I personally think cookies and cream might be the very best milkshake flavor!
    4. Easy to Customize: This would make a great feature at a party! Create a milkshake bar, have someone make a big batch of the milkshake base and then let people stir in their own fun additions and add fun toppings!

    Ingredients

Only a few everyday ingredients are needed to whip up this tasty milkshake treat!

Ingredients to make cookies and cream milkshake.
    Ingredients.

You can find a complete list of ingredients and directions in the recipe card below.

    • Vanilla ice cream – it seems everyone has their favorite brand when it comes to vanilla ice cream. Grab a tub of your favorite next time you’re at the store!
    • Milk – you can use any type of milk here, but the higher the milk fat content the creamier the milkshake will be. I like to use whole milk.
    • Vanilla extract – this isn’t completely necessary, but it adds amazing vanilla flavor to your shake!
    • Oreos – this cookies and cream milkshake wouldn’t be complete with…the cookies!
    • Optional toppings – you can get creative here and top your cookies and cream shake with your favorite toppings. I like whipped cream, some Oreo cookie crumbs and a maraschino cherry on top!

How to make this cookies and cream milkshake recipe

Three pictures of making a cookies and cream milkshake - two of blenders with ingredients, one of the finished product.
Making a cookies and cream milkshake.
    1. Thaw Ice Cream: Slightly thaw your favorite vanilla ice cream before beginning – about 10 minutes on the counter works great.
    2. Crush Oreos: Crush 5 oreo cookies into chunks by putting it in a ziploc bag and smashing with a hammer or rolling it with a rolling pin – or just use your hands. You want it crushed into large chunks of cookies – not fine dust.
    3. Scoop Ice Cream: Scoop the slightly softened ice cream into a blender.
    4. Add Liquid: Add vanilla and ¼ cup milk.
    5. Blend: Blend well. If you want the milkshake to be thinner, add more milk, mixing between additions until you get the thickness you prefer.
    6. Add Oreos: Dump in the crushed oreos and pulse ever so slightly just to incorporate into the milkshake mixture. (You want to have large chunks!)
    7. Make It Pretty: Pour into 2 chilled glasses (this recipe makes about 2 cups of milkshake, so you can have one large milkshake or two smaller ones). Top with your favorite toppings such as whipped cream, chocolate sauce, cherries, and chunks of cookies!
    8. Serve: Serve & enjoy!

Serving Suggestion: For a pretty presentation, drizzle a little chocolate syrup onto the sides of the glasses and freeze before preparing the milkshake.

What to serve with this cookies and cream milkshake?

I think that the perfect way to serve a milkshake is alongside a burger and fries. It’s a classic combination for a reason.

But you could also serve this milkshake as a dessert after any meal or as an easy dessert on its own!

    Yummy milkshake goodness!

More single serving desserts: If you’re looking for another quick and delicious dessert to make for one, you have to try this vanilla mug cake. It’s ready in 7 minutes and made in a mug in the microwave!

More yummy drinks: If you’re looking for a fun warm drink, you’ll love this hot strawberries and cream smoothie! It’s got the flavor of a strawberry milkshake, the warm comfort of hot chocolate, and it has fresh strawberries in it (so you get some extra fruit in your day).

    Substitutions

    • Dairy Free – I know some people can’t have dairy, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a good milkshake! There are lots of great dairy free ice creams and milks out there you could use in this recipe (and Oreos are already dairy free, so no trouble there)!
    • Gluten Free – if you can’t have gluten, see if you can find a package of gluten free Oreos in your local store. If not, there are a lot of other gluten free chocolate sandwich cookies out there that would work, too.

    Variations

This recipe is simple, but sometimes those ones are the easiest ones to play around with! By changing one of the ingredients, you create a whole new version. Here are a few suggestions…

    • Ice Cream – instead of vanilla ice cream, use your favorite flavor (chocolate ice cream, strawberry ice cream, mint ice cream, or even cookies and cream ice cream).
    • Cookies – by using a different kind of cookie you create a totally new milkshake!
    • Extract – you could try adding almond, coconut, or mint extract to your milkshake to compliment whichever ice cream and cookie combination you chose.

Here are a few examples of what you could do:

Strawberry ice cream + chunks of frosted circus animal cookies + vanilla extract.

Chocolate mint ice cream + chopped peppermint patties + mint extract.

    …the options are endless!

    Expert tips and FAQs

What is the best milkshake combination?

This is totally personal preference. I love the cookies and cream combination we created in this recipe, but I also listed a few other combinations I think would be delicious in the variations section of this blog post!

How do you thicken a milkshake?

The easiest way to get a thick milkshake is to add the milk little by little. If you add too much milk, your milkshake will get runny. If this does happen you can always add a bit of extra ice cream to help thicken it back up.

How long do you blend a milkshake?

It should only take about a minute to get a nice, creamy milkshake. If you enjoy your milkshakes a bit more on the lump side, cut that back to 30-45 seconds.
