Energy balls are an easy no-bake recipe that is easy to make and a great snack to keep in the refrigerator. They are made of simple ingredients such as peanut butter, oats, honey, mini chocolate chips, a splash of vanilla, and a pinch of salt.

No bake energy balls in a small ramekin, sitting on fabric napkin.

I firmly believe that chocolate and peanut butter were meant to be one. They work together in peanut butter chocolate no-bake bars, no-bake chocolate oatmeal cookies, this peanut butter chocolate and toffee cake, and even a peanut butter pie.

It’s even delicious in these peanut butter chocolate brownies and this peanut butter fluff dip which are fantastic recipes for parties.

So when the two flavors come together in a snack that you can feel better about eating, it just makes sense to keep the ingredients on hand to make these energy balls.

    Recipe Highlights

    • Great Snack: These energy balls are great for snacking on the road, at sports games, or even after school.
    • Simple Ingredients: The ingredients needed for this recipe are pantry staples and are more than likely on hand and can be made easily.
    • Quick Recipe: With just a 10-minute prep time, these energy bites are ready for chilling, and eating within 30 minutes.

    Ingredients for No-Bake Energy Balls

Here’s what you’ll need to make the energy balls recipe. The full list of ingredients and instructions can be found in the recipe card below.

A few notes about some of the key ingredients:

    • Oats: Old-fashioned oats or quick oats work in this recipe. It just depends on the texture you prefer.
    • Peanut Butter: I prefer using creamy peanut butter for this recipe, although crunchy could work. If you notice that the balls don’t hold together well, it could be due to the nuts, and less of the creamy hold, so adding more peanut butter may work best.
    • Chocolate Chips: Using mini chocolate chips works well for this recipe but regular-size chips can work too, especially if you prefer milk chocolate chips instead of the mini semi-sweet chocolate chips.
    • Salt: A pinch of salt added to sweet ingredients helps balance the sweetness and enhances the flavor.
    • Vanilla Extract: This adds a bit of depth to the recipe and it’s highly recommended, although if you don’t have it on hand, this recipe can still be enjoyed.

    How to Make Energy Balls

Creamy peanut butter, honey, vanilla, salt and chocolate chips in mixing bowl.
    1. Mix together peanut butter, honey, vanilla, salt, and chocolate chips.
Oats added in to mixing bowl with peanut butter honey mixture.
    2. Add in the oats and stir to combine. Chill in the refrigerator.
No bake energy balls on platter.
    3. Form the chilled mixture in to energy balls, and enjoy.

    Recipe Tips:

How to Shape Mixture in to Energy Balls:

    • use clean hands
    • grab a small amount (what a bite-size would be) of the mixture
    • using your fingertips, gently press the mixture together to adhere the peanut butter to the oats to help secure the ingredients for a better hold
    • place the ball in to the palm of your hands and lightly rotate one hand in a clockwise motion, to form a ball.

    Storing Instructions:

Store the energy balls in an air-tight container in the refrigerator or freezer so you can grab one as you wish.

    Recipe FAQs:

Do energy balls really give you energy?

The peanut butter in the balls give protein and the oats provide carbohydrates which can give a burst of energy. However, if too much sugar is added (i.e. too many chocolate chips) this can provide a quick burst of energy but can lead to a sugar crash later.

How long can you keep energy balls in the fridge?

Energy balls are good in the refrigerator for 2 weeks.

What is a substitute for honey in protein balls?

Maple syrup, or agave syrup can be substituted for honey in energy balls.
