Big Mac Casserole: I’m sure plenty of us can sing that jingle about what’s on a golden arches burger! Turn that secret sauce into the best Big Mac casserole topping, making this a family-favorite casserole recipe.
Everyone loves a fast food burger and fries sometimes. Take all the freshest ingredients and combine them into a delicious casserole the entire family will love, at home!
I also love a good chicken taco casserole on Taco Tuesday. And if you aren’t a casserole person, you can still use the oven and make crispy chicken tacos. However, having a hamburger casserole recipe on hand is perfect for the days you just can’t grill juicy Lucy burgers.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe
- Mix it and forget it: After browning the beef, you simply pop this in the oven and wait! Get your chores done in that time or play a family game.
- Make-ahead recipe: Save the toppings for later – you can make this casserole ahead and simply reheat!
- Everyone’s favorite: Just like placing your burger order, everyone can add their favorite toppings to their plate.
Ingredients Needed
Here’s what you’ll need to make this Big Mac casserole.
- Ground beef – I tend towards and 85/15 mix so it is still tender and flavorful but isn’t overly greasy. Be sure and drain any excess fat after browning and before mixing in the seasoning.
- Potatoes – Peeled and diced russet potatoes hold up nicely to the saucy casserole. It lets you have your fries AND your burger all at once! If you aren’t up for all that chopping, feel free to use cubed frozen hash browns (2 cups). No need to thaw ahead.
- Cheese – I love cheddar on a burger, but you can use any nicely melting cheese you prefer, or a blend. If you shred your own it will melt even better!
- Secret sauce – Everyone knows the not-so-secret sauce is a blend of mayo, ketchup, and mustard with some seasonings. Mix this up and feel free to adjust to your liking!
- Toppings – Set up a whole burger bar of toppings for everyone to add to their plate.

How to Make Cheeseburger Casserole
Once you brown the beef, all that’s left is to mix everything up and bake.
STEP 1. Brown the beef Brown the beef with onion and seasonings so that it tastes like a burger!
STEP 2. Begin layers. Place the potatoes in a greased casserole dish, then add cooked beef plus beef broth.
Tip: Always drain the beef before seasoning it. This way all your seasonings won’t go down the drain!
STEP 3. Cheese it up. Add cheese and then bake until the potatoes are cooked through.
STEP 4. Add toppings. If you are going to eat the entire casserole at once, you can add some toppings for the perfect presentation!
Recipe Pro Tips
- Toppings go last. If you don’t think you’ll eat the casserole all at once, save the toppings for plating.
- Secret sauce. Add other seasonings or swap out the type of mustard used for your own secret recipe!
Recipe FAQs
I love this perfect ratio of mayo, ketchup, and mustard. You can always dress it up by adding pickle relish, Worcestershire sauce, garlic or onion powder, or replacing the yellow mustard for a brown or spicy variety.
All your burger toppings! Lettuce, tomatoes, raw onion, the works! Pickles for the pickle lovers. Just be sure and add the toppings to each individual plate. You won’t want them on the casserole if you have leftovers because they won’t reheat nicely.
Russet potatoes will hold up the best to the beef and sauce, so that’s really the only fresh potato I would use. If you’re pressed for time and don’t want to slice them, use a bag of frozen hash browns! The cooking time will be cut to 30-40 minutes if going this route.
What to Serve with Cheeseburger Casserole
A fresh green salad is the perfect side to a hot casserole! It’s my favorite way to serve it. You could also add a honey lime fruit salad. Finally, to round out the fast food experience, end the night with a cookies and cream shake.
Storage
Leftover casserole is great for up to 3 days in the fridge. Reheat in the oven or microwave. I recommend only adding toppings to your plates when serving – they won’t reheat well so don’t put them directly on the casserole.

Recipe
Big Mac Casserole
Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 cup diced white onion
- ½ cup beef broth
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon worcestershire sauce
- 2-3 medium russet potatoes peeled and diced (about 2 cups)
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
Sauce
- ½ cup mayonnaise
- ¼ cup ketchup
- 2 teaspoons yellow mustard
Toppings
- 1 cup shredded lettuce
- 1 medium tomato diced
- ¼ cup hamburger dill pickles rough chopped
- 2 tablespoons red or white onion diced
Instructions
- Prepare an 8X8 baking dish with non-stick spray and heat the oven to 350 degrees.
- Place beef and onions into a skillet over medium heat. Cook until the meat is just done and the onions are translucent. Drain any fat from the pan.
- Add the salt, pepper, garlic, and worcestershire sauce to the pan. Stir to incorporate then remove from heat.
- Place diced potatoes in an even layer in the prepared baking dish. Then cover the potatoes with the cooked beef. Then pour the beef broth over the top.
- Place into the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes or until the potatoes are soft and most of the liquid is absorbed.
- Remove from the oven and sprinkle over shredded cheese. Cook for another 5 minutes until the cheese is melted.
- Make the sauce. Mix the mayonnaise, ketchup, and mustard together until well combined.
- Pour half of the sauce over the casserole. You can use more of the sauce if desired or use the extra when serving.
- Lastly, sprinkle toppings onto the casserole and enjoy!
Notes
- Use frozen cubed hash browns (straight from frozen) instead of fresh potatoes. This will reduce your cooking time to 30-40 minutes.
- Swap in water for the broth if you’re out.
- Add more seasonings or use different mustard in the burger sauce if you prefer.
