Homemade chicken broth in a jar, and ingredients in stock pot.

Homemade Chicken Broth is easy to make, so rich in flavor to use in soups, pasta recipes or to sip on when you’re not feeling well. In about 2 hours, you’ll have chicken stock ready to use.

This recipe uses a whole, uncooked chicken but if you have a rotisserie chicken on hand, did you know you can make chicken broth out of a rotisserie chicken too? It’s true, and it’s a great way to not let the bones go to waste.

    Why You’ll Love This Recipe

    • Boiling a whole chicken is a great way to cook chicken for a lot of different recipes but it can also create a delicious chicken broth in the process.
    • Homemade chicken broth can have a rich flavor that storebought may not have.
    • This recipe uses simple ingredients to create a fresh flavor, and it’s also a great way to use up any vegetables or herbs you may have left from other recipes.

    Ingredients

    Ingredients for homemade chicken broth.

You can see the full list of ingredients and amounts in the recipe card below but I’ve included notes about some of the key ingredients here:

    • Whole chicken: Sizes of the chicken will vary, so just make sure your pot is big enough to hold the chicken and enough water to cover it.
    • Dried thyme: If you decide to use fresh thyme, this will be about 3-4 sprigs.
    • Dried rosemary: If using fresh rosemary instead, only one sprig of fresh rosemary is needed.
    • Black peppercorns: Don’t feel the need to go out and buy peppercorns just for this recipe, especially if you don’t have a grinder to use the rest in other recipes. Ground black pepper will work as well.
    • Onion: Yellow or white onions are best for making chicken broth.

    FAQs

Is chicken broth just boiled chicken water?

Basically yes, however, adding herbs and vegetables to the chicken and water can give the broth more flavor.

What is the difference between chicken stock and chicken broth?

Chicken broth is made from boiling chicken meat, vegetables, and seasonings. Chicken stock is made by boiling just the bones.

Can you put raw chicken in boiling broth?

It’s best to place the raw chicken in the stock pot and then add the water and begin to boil.

    How to Store Chicken Broth

To store: Let cool to room temperature, and transfer to airtight containers or jars. It can be stored in the fridge for up to five days.

To freeze: This also freezes beautifully, for up to three months! Be sure to use a freezer-safe container if you choose to do this method!

To thaw: Place the container in the fridge overnight and reheat as needed.
