Alfredo Sauce Recipe: This easy, classic white sauce recipe is ready in about 15 minutes and is delicious served over pasta, chicken, or your favorite Alfredo dish, especially this Chicken Alfredo Garlic Bread recipe.

I love a good store-bought Alfredo sauce to make things fast and easy but there’s something about a homemade Alfredo that can add even more richness to a recipe.

Looking to impress for a special anniversary dinner or a romantic Valentine’s Day? Making your own Alfredo sauce can really take things over the top.

This Alfredo Chicken Lasagna and this Bacon Ranch Chicken Pasta Recipe both call for a jarred Alfredo sauce but you can easily use this homemade sauce recipe to make the recipes instead.

    Why You’ll Love This Recipe

    • Ease: Alfredo sauce may sound difficult to make but it is really easy to make, especially following this step-by-step recipe. So this is great for beginners and a recipe that so many gourmet chefs can use too!
    • Versatile: Love adding additional ingredients to your Alfredo sauce? This is a great base recipe for your favorite additions. For instance, adding cracked red pepper to give it a little spice, or even Italian seasoning, to give it additional flavor.
    • Simple ingredients: It’s possible that you already have the ingredients on hand to make this recipe. If not, they can easily be found at most grocery stores.

    Ingredients

Ingredients for homemade Alfredo sauce recipe.
    • Parmesan cheese: Shredded Parmesan was used the day of making this recipe for you but grated parmesan cheese works as well, if not better. You can also use Asiago or Romano cheese in place or parmesan for a slightly different flavor. Pro Tip: Shredding or grating your cheese is so much better than storebought pre-shredded, as there are anti-caking ingredients added to most pre-shredded cheeses that prevent it from melting evenly.
    • Minced garlic: Mincing your garlic gives the most flavor but you can also keep things easier by using minced garlic in the jar/tube.
    • Butter: Feel free to use salted or unsalted butter for Alfredo sauce, although if buying butter specifically for this recipe, I’d opt for unsalted.
    • Heavy cream: This is highly recommended for this recipe to achieve the thickness and richness of the sauce. However, if you must, you can use milk and flour, or cornstarch, to add thickness. You can also use cream cheese, like in this cream cheese pasta.

Make sure to see the recipe card below with all of the ingredient amounts and directions in one place.

    Alfredo Sauce Recipe FAQs

What is Alfredo sauce made of?

Alfredo sauce is made using heavy cream, butter, Parmesan cheese, and garlic. Simple ingredients with a delicious rich flavor to serve over pasta, chicken, or in your favorite dish.

Can you use milk instead of heavy cream for Alfredo?

You can but it will result in a thinner sauce. Or, you can make a roux and add a little cornstarch or flour to thicken the Alfredo sauce if using milk instead of heavy cream.

Is shredded or grated parmesan better for Alfredo?

Freshly shredded or freshly grated parmesan are better than pre-grated or shredded. Both shredded and grated can work, although most believe that grated melts more evenly and is preferred.

    Storage Instructions

If you’re storing homemade Alfredo sauce, allow it to fully cool and then store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

Freezing this Alfredo sauce recipe can also be an option, for up to 3 months, if you allow it to fully thaw in the refrigerator before serving.
