⭐️ Why This Recipe Works
- 3 ingredients: That’s all it takes to make these easy treats!
- Thick and gooey Lucky Charms treats: Making these in square pans (we used a 9×9) makes these Lucky Charms bars thick and delicious when using fresh, gooey marshmallows.
🧾 Ingredients Needed
I’ve highlighted a couple of ingredients with some relevant notes. Aside from this, the ingredients needed are pretty basic.
- Butter – We use salted butter for this recipe. However, if you’re using unsalted butter, add a pinch of salt to the marshmallow mixture before adding the cereal.
- Marshmallows – You’ll want to use a 10-ounce bag of marshmallows (regular or mini size). This is equivalent to about 40 big marshmallows and 6 cups of mini marshmallows.
Tip: Set aside some extra marshmallows from the cereal and press them into the top of the treats before they set.
📖 Substitutions
Sometimes substitutions are necessary. Here are some suggestions that may help:
- Lucky Charms – Using an off-brand Lucky Charms is absolutely ok. You may also find different cereals that will work great too, such as Reeses Peanut Butter Puffs, and Cocoa Pebbles, and we’ve even made Fruity Pebbles treats!
- Vanilla – we like to add vanilla extract to a lot of our rice krispie treat recipes, such as these caramel rice krispie treats so feel free to add a teaspoon of vanilla extract too if you’d like. However, Lucky Charms tend to have a sweeter, vanilla taste to them already so we omitted this.
👩🏻🍳 Step-by-Step Instructions
For the best results use a fresh bag of marshmallows and cereal. If either of these ingredients is stale you will end up with stale-tasting treats.

It’s really simple to make these Lucky Charms marshmallow treats! Here’s how:
STEP 1. Line a 9×9 inch baking pan (or 13×9 for thinner treats) with parchment paper and set aside.
STEP 2. Next, place the marshmallows and butter in a large microwave-safe bowl (Image 1).
Microwave on high for 60 seconds and then stir well and then microwave for another 30 seconds.Stir until smooth and the marshmallow and butter are well combined. If needed, microwave for an additional 30 seconds until the marshmallows are melted (Image 2).
STEP 3. Add the cereal and mix until the cereal is evenly coated with marshmallow and butter mixture (Image 3).
STEP 4. Turn the coated cereal mixture into the prepared pan gently pressing it into an even layer (Image 4).
Tips:
- Be gentle with pressing the treats in the pan, using a light hand. Pressing too much or too hard may result in tough Lucky Charm treats.
- To prevent stickiness. You can spray your spoon and hands with non-stick spray to help prevent the melted marshmallows from sticking when mixing and pressing the treats into the pan.
STEP 5. Allow the crispy treats to set at room temperature for at least an hour before cutting (Image above.)
Enjoy the treats by themselves or put them on a fun charcuterie board like on this St. Patrick’s Day charcuterie board!
💭 Recipe Pro Tips
Make sure you also see the other tips above, for these homemade Lucky Charms treats!
- Extra gooey marshmallow treats. If you’d like, you can set aside some marshmallows from the cereal and press them into the top of the treats before they set.
- Fresh Marshmallows. For the best results use a fresh bag of marshmallows and cereal. If either of these ingredients is stale you will end up with stale-tasting treats.
📋 Recipe FAQs
It’s best to store any leftover treats in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days. These treats tend to get stale faster than traditional rice krispies treats, so you may even want to wrap them in plastic wrap to help them stay fresh, longer.
Although these are delicious the way they are made, it could be fun to add sprinkles or drizzle melted green candy melts for St. Patrick’s Day.
