Substitutions
The ingredients in this recipe are pretty simple, but there are a few substitutions that can be made if you need.
- Half and half cream – you can use whole milk (or whatever milk you have in the fridge) instead. Your rice Krispy treats won’t be as creamy, but the milk will still help with mixing the ingredients together more easily.
- Marshmallows – I haven’t tried this, but some people have had great success replacing the marshmallows with marshmallow fluff or even creamy peanut butter. If you do try this substitution, let me know in the comments below!
- Chocolate Chips – you can use 4 ounces of milk chocolate instead of chocolate chips. Either one will create that yummy chocolate flavor we are looking for in this dessert.
Variations
Our chocolate Rice Krispie treats are already a variation on a classic no bake fun treat, but there’s still tons of ways you can mix things up! Here are a few suggestions…
- Mix-ins – our favorite way to add variety to simple recipes is to add some mix-ins to match the occasion. Whether it’s a holiday, a birthday, or just a Tuesday, you can find fun and festive sprinkles and candies to stir into and sprinkle on top of your Rice Krispie treats!
- Mint – instead of vanilla extract, try using peppermint extract to turn these into Mint Chocolate Rice Krispie Treats!
- Switch Up The Cereal – instead of classic crispy rice cereal, try a different rice cereal like cocoa Krispies, fruity pebbles, or similar!
Storage
Store your Rice Krispie treats in the pan (covered), in an airtight container, or wrap each treat individually in plastic wrap. Treats should keep for 2 days at room temperature.
Expert tips and FAQs
I haven’t tried this, but some people have had great success replacing the marshmallows with marshmallow fluff or even peanut butter. If you do try this substitution, let me know in the comments below!
The biggest culprit here is heat – if you melt your marshmallows over too high of heat (even though it’s tempting to speed things up) they will become harder! Take it low and slow and you’ll be rewarded with soft, chewy Rice Krispie treats.
Technically you can, but old marshmallows don’t melt as well as fresh ones. We would highly recommend grabbing a fresh bag for this recipe!
