You can find the complete list of ingredients and directions can be found in the recipe card below.
- 4 cups prepared angel food cake or pound cake, cut into small ½-inch cubes
- 1 ½ cups strawberries, chopped or sliced
- 1 ½ cups blueberries
- ⅓ cup powdered sugar

- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Set out 6 (9-ounce) clear plastic cups or 6 (8-ounce) mason jars .
- In the bowl of a stand mixer with the whisk attachment or a hand mixer, prepare the whipped cream by combining the heavy whipping cream, powdered sugar and vanilla; beat on high speed until stiff peaks form (about 2-3 minutes).

Substitutions & Variations
Need to make a substitution? Looking to change up this recipe a bit? Here are a few suggestions…
- Cake – instead of angel food or pound cake, you could try using white cake. Really you could use any cake you like, but if you’re going for the “red, white, and blue” look, you need some form of white cake.
- Berries – instead of strawberries, you could use raspberries or even chopped cherries!
- Whipped Cream – instead of making fresh whipped cream, you can use canned whipped cream or even a thawed tub of cool whip.
Trifle recipes are super adaptable. You can use this recipe to make a trifle for any occasion by getting creative with the cake, the creamy layer, and the texture layer. You could try chocolate cake, chopped chocolate or cookies, and pudding! There are so many possible combinations, and they would all be delicious.
Storage
You can store your prepared berry and angel food trifle covered in the refrigerator for 1-2 days. They’ll still be good to eat as long as the fruit doesn’t look old and the cake isn’t soggy.
For the best results, I’d recommend not making them too far ahead so everything is fresh! If you did need to prepare things ahead, you could get all your ingredients ready and store them separately until the day you want to make and eat the trifles.
Expert tips and FAQs
Either one will work and taste great! If you’re looking for quick and easy, already prepared cake is the way to go.If buying a prepared cake, make sure it’s at least 10 ounces in order to get 4 cups of cubes when you cut it.
No, it’s not mandatory. While the chilling time will give this dessert the best flavor and texture, you absolutely could serve them right after assembling them if you are short on time.
