How to Make Salami Roses – this tutorial will show you the easiest way to make a salami rose with a shot glass or wine glass, perfect for a charcuterie board, or when entertaining with a meat and cheese tray.
Charcuterie boards are beautiful additions to any buffet or holiday table, and adding items such as salami roses to them send them over the top! I love making charcuterie boards as an appetizer idea for parties, holidays (like this Christmas charcuterie board) and just as a casual dinner with friends.
Did you know it’s easy to make salami roses? It’s true! I’m going to show you below just how easy it is, and tips on how to make them “stick”, different types of meats to use besides salami, and how to make different sizes of them.
What You’ll Need:
All you’ll need to make these meat roses are:
- slices of salami
- shot glass (or wine glass)
(It will depend on the size of the salami rose that you’re looking for. See more tips below.)
How to Make a Salami Rose:
With only a few steps, you’ll have salami roses in minutes. I’ll walk you through with photos but you can also see the recipe card below for the tutorial in clear, concise, steps.
- Take one slice of salami, and bend the middle of it, over the edge of the shot glass, pressing hard, trying to get it to stick in a downward form.
- Next, take a second slice of salami, and cover half of the first piece of salami, pressing down on both, trying to get them to stick in place.
- Repeat with more slices of salami, working your way around the edge of the shot glass.
- When you’ve worked all the way around, keep repeating the process of overlapping the previous piece, placing the slices on top of one other, making layers and layers of salami. (How many slices will depend on the width of your shot glass or wine glass, and how “thick” you want your rose.)
- When you have as many layers of salami as desired (I usually do 3 layers or so) take the palm of your clean hand (or glove covered hand) and press down very hard. This is securing the salami pieces the best that you can, so they’ll “stick” together in the rose shape.)
- Turn the shot glass over on to where you want to place your salami rose, and slowly lift up on the shot glass. (TIP: You can press down on the shot glass after flipping to give the rose an extra “stick” to stay in place.)
Tips for Perfect Salami Roses
- Temperature of Salami: You don’t want the salami to sit out too long of course but if you allow it to sit out for about 10 minutes before working with it, it won’t be as “stiff” when trying to mold.
- Placement on Board: If placing your salami rose on a charcuterie board, plan ahead and think of what types of food you can “butt up” against the rose to help hold it in place.
- Make Roses Ahead of Time: These can be made ahead of time, and stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Either store in containers where the sides of the container can help hold the salami rose in shape, or place something in the container that presses up against to the rose to help secure it. (i.e. paper towels, cheese, etc.)
- Different Types of Meats: Salami slices are great to work with to make roses but I’ve also made pepperoni roses for charcuterie boards.
- Wine Glasses, and Different Types of Glasses: Wine glasses can be used to make large salami roses, as well as champagne glasses, or any other, thin, round, edge that’s food save. Do note that the bigger the rim, the bigger your salami roses will be.
Recipe
How to Make Salami Roses
Ingredients
- 12 slices salami
Instructions
- Begin by taking one slice of salami, and bending the middle of the salami over the edge of the shot glass.
- Next, take a second piece of salami and place it on the middle of the first piece, overlapping half of the first peice of salami.
- Repeat this process, going around the entire rim of the shot glass. When you've reached the first piece, continue on, place the salami on top of one another, making layers. For a shot glass, about 12 pieces, and/or three layers of salami usually gives a "full" rose look. Size of shot glass, wine glass or champagne glass can vary on amounts of salami needed.
- When desired amount of salami slices are added, take your clean palm and press down on the rim, and the sides of the salami, trying to secure the peices to stick to one another.
- Decide where to place your salami rose on your charcuterie board, and turn the shot glass over, pressing down again, and slowly pulling off the shot glass.See tips in blog post for ways to help make the rose even more secure for the best appearance.
