Red Velvet Donuts: These mouth-watering red velvet donuts are so easy to make you’ll hardly believe it. All you’ll need is red velvet cake mix, ripe bananas, and some cream cheese frosting!

The festive color of these yummy red velvet donuts makes them the perfect treat to serve for special occasions like the Fourth of July, Valentine’s Day, or even Christmas morning.

Why You’ll Love These Red Velvet Donuts

I never turn down a good donut, especially if it comes with a little bit of coffee. But these red velvet donuts? They’re on a whole other level. They have all that classic red velvet flavor (complete with the tangy cream cheese glaze) in the convenient packaging of a donut! (Super fun, right? Similar to these brownie donuts!)

The best part of these moist donuts is that they are not only delicious (but let me tell you, they sure are), they are also SO easy to make. This is the kind of recipe you can make on a moment’s notice with things you can keep in your pantry at all times.

Plus, if you’re a fan of red velvet, you’ll also love this red velvet cupcakes recipe and these red velvet cookies made with a cake mix!

    Ingredients

This easy recipe requires simple ingredients that you can keep in your pantry so you’ll be ready to whip up a batch of these red velvet donuts on a whim! Having a recipe on hand that doesn’t take a long time to make is perfect for last-minute guests.

    You’ll need:

    • 1 box red velvet cake mix, dry
    • 2 cups mashed ripe bananas
    • 1 – 16 oz container cream cheese frosting
    • Red sugar sprinkles (or sprinkles of your choice!)
    • Cooking spray
    • Ziploc bag or pastry bag

Step-by-Step Instructions for Red Velvet Cake Donuts

    1. Preheat your oven to 425 degrees F and spray your donut mold(s) with nonstick spray.
    2. In a large bowl, mash the ripe bananas with a fork or potato masher.

    1. Bake in the preheated oven for 7-8 minutes, or until the donuts are cooked through and a toothpick inserted in the donut comes out clean.

    1. Allow the donuts to cool in the pan for 5-10 minutes before transferring them to a wire cooling rack.
    2. Add the frosting to a microwave safe bowl and microwave cream cheese frosting for 10-20 seconds for a runny consistency (this makes dipping easier).
    3. Dunk each cooled donut upside down into the frosting and return to the cooling rack right-side up. Follow immediately with sprinkles on top of the donuts before the frosting sets.

    Substitutions

This recipe doesn’t call for very many ingredients, so there aren’t very many substitutions. That being said…

    • Bananas – 2 cups of applesauce can be used to replace the bananas.

    Variations

Although there aren’t many substitutions, there are lots of ways you can create variety with this recipe.

    • Cake Mix – this recipe is for red velvet donuts, but if you switched out the cake mix you could make something different entirely!
    • Sprinkles – swap out the sprinkles to make these festive for the specific occasion you are making them for. Do red and green for Christmas, pink and hearts for valentine’s day, blue and red for the Fourth of July. You get the idea!
    • Other Toppings – you can get as creative as you like with the toppings on a donut. Crunch up some ripple chips and drizzle it with chocolate sauce. Add some crispy bacon bits and drizzle it with maple syrup. The sky’s the limit.
    • Frosting – personally I’m a big fan of the delicious cream cheese glaze in this recipe, but if you don’t like cream cheese frosting you can try your favorite frosting in its place!

    Equipment

To make these red velvet donuts, you will need a donut pan. This donut pan is similar but any donut pan will do. If your pans only hold 6 donuts, you’ll need to have two of them or bake two separate batches.

    Storage

Store in an airtight container for up to 1-2 day at room temperature, or 5-7 days in the refrigerator.

You can also freeze these donuts unfrosted in a freezer safe, airtight container for up to a month.

    Expert tips and FAQs

What is the difference between baked and fried donuts?

The difference is mostly in the baking method. A baked donut will be cooked in the oven, where as a fried donut is usually deep fried in oil.

Most of the time, a baked donut will be more of a cake donut as well and a fried donut will be made with yeast dough.

What can I use instead of eggs in donuts?

Your in luck, because this donut recipe doesn’t call for any eggs at all! If you are using a different recipe and it calls for eggs, you could try replacing it with a cornstarch egg, or look for a vegan egg alternative in your local grocery store.

Is a donut a baked good?

You betcha! Donuts would be classified as a “baked good”, and these donuts, in particular, are both baked and goooooood.
