The Ingredients in Classic Beef Stroganoff
Only simple ingredients for this easy beef stroganoff recipe!
You can find the complete list of ingredients and directions can be found in the recipe card below.
- Egg noodles – original beef stroganoff typically calls for egg noodles but you can use a different kind of pasta or noodle if you prefer. Such as fettuccini noodles, elbow, rotini, etc.
- Can of cream of mushroom soup – doesn’t get much easier than a soup that can help create a creamy mushroom sauce!
- Onion – fresh white onion is our favorite but you can use a yellow onion or even minced, frozen chopped, or dried onion if that’s what you have on hand! I’ve even considered adding onion soup mix in to this recipe!
- Ground beef – Any kind of ground beef should do, just make sure to drain after it has fully cooked, if necessary. (Make sure to see these other dinner recipes with ground beef.) I’d be curious what ground chicken here would look like but saving it for this ground chicken meatloaf may be a better idea.
- Sour cream – adding a little sour cream can really help give that rich sour cream gravy that smooth flavor that we love in this recipe.
- Milk – this creamy beef stroganoff wouldn’t be nearly as good without the creaminess of milk, half and half or heavy cream. You could use either one for this recipe but you may want to use a little more milk if you find that your stroganoff is too thick.
- Fresh parsley – this is optional but it adds an amazing color!
- Salt – you may find that you want more/less than what this recipe calls for but remember, you can always add it but you can’t take it away, if you use too much! Taste test!
- Pepper – just a small amount of black pepper is all this needs for the perfect touch!

Substitutions
- Rice – instead of using pasta, you can use rice, such as brown or white rice.
- Mashed Potatoes – Instead of pasta or rice, you could even spoon the beef stroganoff over mashed potatoes for an old-fashioned dinner!
- Meat – want to use something other than ground beef? No problem. Try ground turkey or even sausage for a different flavor spin!
Sometimes you may find it necessary to substitute items and experiment with what you have on hand. So feel free to try other common ingredients such as cream cheese, beef broth (or beef stock), to add more creaminess or to thin it out.
If you’d like to add more flavors or season it even more, you may like to try adding a bit of Worcestershire sauce, white wine, soy sauce, or even dijon mustard for some zing!
Faq’s
For traditional beef stroganoff, ground beef is preferred in our house. However, you can also use other using tender strips of beef such as sirloin steak (top sirloin), which we think is the best cut of meat. If you have tougher cuts of meat, such as stew meat, you could even put it in a pressure cooker before hand if you like for a more tender meat result.
This could be because your sour cream was really cold when added in to the meat mixture. It can help to temper your sour cream by adding a small amount of the warm mixture in to the sour cream, stirring (to warm it up a bit), and then adding it to the rest of the dish to continue cooking.
We prefer it to be on the thicker side but if you like it to be more “thin” you can definitely add a little milk to it, to reach the consistency you prefer!
Storage
If you happen to have leftover stroganoff, let it cool off, and then you can store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. Simply reheat the stroganoff by placing it in the microwave or heating it on low, in a saucepan. (You may need to add a little milk to help thin it out if the noodles soaked up most of the creamy brown gravy.)

It was kind of bland. I would double onions and add more salt and pepper. Also I added mushrooms.
