An avocado BLT takes the classic sandwich recipe to the next level. Plus, the simple seasonings I use and how I apply them, make every bite full of so much extra goodness and flavor. Bake bacon in the oven ahead of time, pop it in the microwave, or make air fryer bacon, and you can easily assemble this sandwich in minutes.
BLTs (bacon, lettuce, and tomato sandwiches) have been around for years. It wasn’t until recently that I decided to start adding avocados on BLTs and I’m so glad that I did because they had a creamy layer, and good fats.

Ingredients
Make sure to see the recipe card below as well, to get all of the specifics of the ingredients and instructions!
Ingredient Tips:
- Mayo: Using a great quality of mayonnaise is key for this. I suggest Hellman’s, or Best Foods brands.
- Bread: I love using wheat (honey and nut bread) but you can use white bread or your favorite type of bread.
- Bacon: This recipe calls for cooked bacon, so making it ahead of time, however you prefer can help save time when it comes time to eat. Thick bacon works best, and crispy bacon makes the sandwich easier to eat so you’re not pulling on the bacon when taking a bite.
- Tomatoes: Do not refrigerate tomatoes. This causes them to lose flavor.
- Seasonings: Sprinkling salt on ingredients such as tomatoes and avocados, can help even out the flavors. The garlic pepper adds a hint of spice and garlic to the already delicious mayo but it is optional.
How to Make an Avocado BLT
It’s really easy to make this version of the BLT and feel free to change up the layers and the ingredients but I’m showing how I make this sandwich, to get optimal flavor!
- To toast or not to toast: Either toasted or not toasted will work, however, my favorite is not toasted, to appreciate the texture of the crispy bacon, soft tomato, crunchy lettuce and creamy mayo. Sometimes toasted bread can overpower the textures of the ingredients.
- Start by spreading on mayo on bread and seasoning the mayo. The amount can depend on how much mayo you actually love on a sandwich but I do put mayo on both slices of bread, and this is usually about 2 Tablespoons total for the sandwich.
- Next, slice half of an avocado thin. You can also choose to mash your avocado and spread this on your sandwich as well. Add the avocado on top of one slice of mayonnaise-topped bread. Sprinkle sliced avocados with salt.
- Cut 6 pieces of thick bacon in half, and place all of them on top of the avocado.
- Slice tomato in to 2 thin slices, and place on top of bacon. Sprinkle tomatoes with salt.
- Next, place two pieces of leaf lettuce on top of bacon slices.
- Place the other slice of garlic pepper and mayo-topped bread, on top of the lettuce.
- Serve, or slice in half and serve.
Recipe Tips:
- Sandwich assembly: If your bacon cooks flat, your tomatoes and avocado and tomato slices are sliced thin, your sandwich should stay assembled well while eating, without falling apart. However, feel free to place toothpicks in to sandwich to help secure ingredients, if needed.
- Too salty: Keep in mind that some garlic pepper contains salt and some bacon is saltier than others. So be cautious of adding too much salt.
- Tomatoes: Pat dry the tomatoes after slicing to prevent juices from making the bread mushy.
Additional Topping Options for a BLT
- Cheese: American, pepper jack, swiss or provolone are delicious cheeses for this sandwich.
- Onion: Sliced white or yellow onion would also be delicious on this sandwich.
- Chips: Yes! Regular, original potato chips add a fun crunch to this sandwich.
- Sauce: Not a fan of mayo? No problem. Using mustard, or an aioli could be a great alternative.

I made a heart healthy version of this without the bacon. I toasted sourdough bread for crunch & used just a pinch of salt. The garlic pepper is genius. (Heart healthy guidelines are <13 g. saturated fat, <1500 mg. sodium & <23 g. added sugar daily.)
