Curious about how to make toast in the oven? Well, it can be done, and in a few different ways. I’m showing you the various methods, so you can pick which way you want to make your oven-baked toast!

Love a buttered toast? Dry toast? Quick toast? Real butter, or vegetable oil spread? See which type of toast you’d prefer below and how it was baked, with additional details to help you decide how you’ll make your toasted bread.

Toast slices on plate, with a dollop of butter in the middle of one piece.

Toast is so versatile and is great as a side to your favorite breakfast sausage or to these country-fried potatoes for a great breakfast. Or, toasted bread is great for your favorite sandwiches, like this tuna salad recipe.

No matter what your toast is for, baking bread in the oven is easy, especially if cooking a large amount.

    Key Ingredients

The ingredients needed depend on the cooking method you prefer and what bread will be used. Toast can be made with or without cooking it in butter or spread. See the different methods below.

Bread slices with stick butter on baking sheet.
Regular sliced bread and real butter.
Loaf of bread with butter on a baking sheet.
Thick, brioche bread & vegetable spread.
    • Bread – Different types of bread can be toasted but the thickness and type can make the bake time, vary. Regular sliced bread, brioche, French, Italian, and sourdough, are all great types to toast.
    • Butter – Storebought stick butter, homemade butter, or buttery spread (vegetable oil spread) can be used to make toast, if desired. Do note that the type of butter can make a difference in the result as well. See the results below.

Note: You can also butter your toast after it has been toasted.

How to Make Toast in the Oven

Depending on the result that you’re looking for, and how your oven cooks, there are different ways that you can make your toast.

With or Without Butter or Spread

First, decide if you’d like to toast your bread with or without butter or spread. Toating bread without spreading something on it, will result in a “dry” and crispy toast. With butter, can result in a flavorful, not-as-dry, bite.

Best Method for Cooking Toast in the Oven

In my opinion, baking toast (either thick or regular sliced bread) is best baked with salted butter, in the oven, at 425°F for 5 minutes on one side, and then 5 minutes on the other. See the top piece of bread in each of the photos below.

    • Toasting Bread at 425°F – Bakes the toast more evenly and gives it the golden color.
    • Broiling Bread – Cooks faster but the edges can burn before the rest of the bread has toasted.

Real Butter or Vegetable Oil Spread

Real butter makes better toast than vegetable oil spread but it’s still possible to achieve a toast with a spread. So if this is what you have on hand, instead of real butter, it’s ok to use it too.

When broiling thicker bread, this could result in browner edges before the middle gets toasted, more so than thinner bread.

    Common Questions About Baking Toast

Do I have to butter toast before baking?

No. However, buttering the bread before toasting is recommended to give the toast a better flavor. Or, spreading butter on the toast after baking will work too.

Should I use vegetable oil spread or real butter to make toast?

Either will work but results are better if using real butter.

How long do you bake toast in the oven?

You can bake toast at 425° F or broil the bread to make toast. Baking at 425°F provides a more even golden-brown result but broiling is faster.

    Making Seasoned Toast

Toast doesn’t just have to be for breakfast. Sprinkle on garlic salt, parmesan cheese, shredded cheese, or a slice of cheese for a savory treat to go with spaghetti bolognese or lasagna soup.

    What to Serve with Toast

If making toast for breakfast, you’ll enjoy having these breakfast dishes along with your oven-baked toast:

    Equipment

    • oven

    Ingredients

    • 2 slices bread
    • 4 Tablespoons butter or vegetable spread optional

    Instructions

    Baked at 425°F

    • Preferred method: Spread 1 tablespoon of butter on each slice of bread. Place on a baking sheet and bake in a preheated oven for 5 minutes, and then flip, and bake for an additional 5 minutes.

    Broiled

    • If using butter, spread on each side of the slice(s) of bread. Place on a baking sheet and place in to the oven set to "broil" and broil for one minute. Flip and broil for one more minute.

    Notes

Thickness of bread, type of baking sheet, and choosing whether or not to butter the bread before toasting can make the cook times differ. It’s best to watch the bread to learn your oven’s behavior.
