Steak cooked in cast iron in oven

How to Cook Steak: An oven-baked steak recipe that is melt in your mouth goodness, that’s easy to make and only takes a few minutes!

Cooking a steak in the oven with butter, salt, and pepper makes this one of the easiest and BEST steak recipes EVER! Then, after this recipe, if you love a good southern, fried recipe, you’ll want to try this country-fried steak recipe, too!

The BEST Way to Cook Steak in the Oven

If you’ve ever had a steak, cooking it on the grill can be delicious. (We feel the same way about pork steak recipes.) However, the best way for cooking a steak is by searing it on the stovetop and then baking it in the oven!

Here’s the recipe that you’ll never stray from once you make it!

    More Easy Steak Recipes:

If you love cooking steaks or feel intimidated by it, then you’re going to love the other steak recipes here on the blog because they’re super easy and super flavorful!

The BEST Steak Bites are a huge family favorite, and these BBQ Pork Steaks in the Slow Cooker are so easy for a dump-and-go recipe!

Now if you have venison steak in the freezer, don’t miss this Deer Steak on the Stovetop and this Grilled Deer Steak Recipe.

    Ingredients and Types of Steak

You can jump to the recipe card below for all of the ingredients and instructions all in one place.

For this oven steak recipe, I used two thick-cut ribeye steaks. (Almost an inch thick, although you don’t HAVE to have steaks this same thickness.) You don’t have to use ribeye for this steak recipe either.

Feel free to use sirloin, NY strips, t-bone, porterhouse, or any cut you like!

Ingredients for steak cooked in the oven

    Seasonings for Steak:

For seasoning, I only use salt and pepper. Now, when I say “salt and pepper,” in any of my recipes, you can go ahead and count on that I mean kosher salt and this cracked peppercorn medley.

It is the most DELICIOUS combo of seasonings on a steak.

Now don’t get me wrong. I love a good garlic pepper, lemon pepper, or any other seasoning for that matter… but it’s hard to beat a steak covered in kosher salt and peppercorn. Combine that with browned butter, and it’s game over with my taste buds. It’s the BEST.

How to Cook Steak in the Oven

Make sure to scroll to the bottom of this post to see the full recipe card with step-by-step instructions!

You can salt and pepper your steaks, according to your taste.

For these two, I used a total of about a tablespoon of kosher salt and a teaspoon of peppercorn to season both.

    Allow butter to brown

    How to Brown Butter

Place butter in a skillet that is on medium-high heat. Allow the butter to heat, stirring occasionally, until the butter has turned brown. Stirring it helps the butter brown evenly. Watch for the butter to turn brown, and then add the seasoned steaks.

Pro Tip: You don’t want the butter to burn, so have the steaks ready before browning the butter.

    Sear the Steaks

Once the butter has browned, add the steaks to the hot skillet and sear for one minute on each side, and then place it in to the oven.

How Long to Cook Steak in Oven

The steak will only need 3 minutes in the oven after searing, and it will come out sizzling and smelling like you’re in a delicious steakhouse! If using a cast iron, go ahead and slip the whole pan in the oven.

Just soak in that sizzle sound and heavenly smell during this process!

    Baked Steak

Within minutes, you have a baked steak that’s ready to devour, and if this is your first time cooking a steak… congratulations!

Although optional, compound butter can be delicious on top of your oven-baked steak! Check out these flavored butter recipes to pick one that you’d love on top!

    Popular Steak Questions:

How do you cook the perfect steak?

The secret is to keep it simple, use butter, simple spices, sear and broil it in the oven for a few minutes! It turns out to be the perfect steak every time!

How do you make steak flavorful?

Browned butter adds more flavor than you think it would. The combination of browned butter with kosher salt and peppercorn medley creates a steakhouse flavor that does NOT require steak sauce!

Is it better to cook steak on the stove or in the oven?

Both! You wouldn’t think it would make that big of a difference, but it really does. The pan-searing on the stove gives the browned flavor you love and the really hot oven helps cook the steak through!

    Sides for Steak

Now, of course, there are many options for steak sides, but there is an absolute favorite. This side salad for steak is the best. (Seriously, it has almost 500 reviews).

We love having roasted garlic broccoli and these easy yeast rolls for beginners to complete this dinner but there are a lot of easy side dish recipes to choose from!

    More Easy Beef Dinner Recipes!

If you have a freezer full of beef or need quick and easy dinner ideas, you’ll also love these cheeseburger sliders. They’re a family favorite, and super easy to make in the oven!

Or, if you love slow cooker recipes, these slow cooker cube steaks are so easy to make and are so delicious!

Did you make this? I’d be so grateful if you left a “star” rating below to let me know what you thought! Then, the next time you need a quick and easy recipe, come back to Fantabulosity to browse all of my easy recipes!

    Ingredients

    • 2 Ribeye Steaks
    • 2 tablespoons Salted Butter
    • 1 tablespoon Kosher Salt or to taste
    • ½ tablespoon Cracked Peppercorn Medley or to taste

    Instructions

    • For a "Medium" Steak – Preheat oven to 475 degrees before you even start to season your steaks.
    • Coat your steaks with salt and pepper, on both sides.
    • Over medium to high heat, melt the butter in an oven proof skillet.
    • When the butter is melted and has turned a golden brown, place the steaks into the skillet. Let them sear for about 1 minute (less if you prefer more of a rarer steak, and if thinner than 1-in. thickness.)
    • Flip and let sear on other side for the same amount of time.
    • Place skillet in the oven for about 3 minutes.
    • Remove steak from skillet (or it will continue to cook) and place on a cutting board. Allow the steak to rest for 1-2 minutes to trap the juices inside, and then serve.

    Notes

The amount of salt and pepper to use can vary depending on your preference. Remember, you can always add the salt but you can’t take it away.
Tip: Sprinkling salt on after the steak has cooked and is resting, can provide a great flavor!

Hello, after many attempts over the years to cook steak to my satisfaction, but steak was usually tough even a ribeye. I followed the recipe, but I did not have a cast iron pan, and improvised with a stainless steel pot. I was thrilled by the outcome, my steak was juicy and perfect!!! I learned everything I did wrong in the past.
Thank You, I love the recipe, wish I had found it sooner!!!!

Can you transfer the steaks from the pan to a cookie sheet if you don’t have an oven proof pan?

Hi Margaret! I’ve never tried that but it’s definitely something to try! The only thing I can think of is that since the cookie sheet won’t be warm and that the juices/butter from the pan won’t transfer over, it may not have the same result… but it may still be worth a shot!

Hi Chad! Thank you for your question! I actually set the oven to 475°, not the “broil” setting. I did mention “broiling” but it was more like a figure of speech. So I’ll change that in case it causes any more confusion! 🙂 Thank you!

Hi Tom. Thank you for your feedback. I love blogging and sharing life as well as recipes. However, this is why I also put a “jump to recipe” button at the very top of every recipe post, so you can skip through what you don’t want to read/see. If this is still too troublesome for you, I’d recommend you pay for a cookbook so you don’t have to be troubled by the storytelling on blogs. Have a good day.

Actually, maybe we should just head over to Tom’s site to see all his recipes – oh wait, he doesn’t have one!!!!!

BTW, we’re planning on oven steaks tomorrow and needed this.

Although we’re changing it up a bit. If you soak the steaks in milk (yup, that’s right, milk) for an hour or two, dry them off and then roll them in a flour, kosher salt and peppercorn mix before frying, they have a fantastic crunchy crust. Mmmm, delicious!

I’ve heard that my sister is looking for a recipe because she does not know how to cook a steak in the oven. We both grew up in our father’s cattle farm and got used to grill steaks on the all the time. She wants to know if ovens can also make nice juicy steaks so I might look for more sites online so that I can give her options on how to cook it in her home.

They would need to be cooked longer to be well done! I’d say around bake around 5-6 minutes just to make sure! (But I wouldn’t hesitate checking after 4-5, and cutting on open to check, since you’ll be cutting it for the toddler anyway!) 🙂 I hope that helps!
