Why This Recipe Works
- It uses a few ingredients: With only 5 ingredients, this decadent Oreo recipe uses items that you may even have on hand.
- Make-ahead recipe: Did you know that you can make this recipe in advance if you want to? Since it needs to chill for at least 3 hours anyway, it’s great to make hours before serving so you can focus on other things.
- Oreo recipes: Oreos are so popular and if you’re a fan of our Oreo Pizza, this Oreo No-Bake Cheesecake, this Oreo Cheesecake, and these Oreo Rice Krispie Treats, then you’re also going to love this one!
Ingredients Needed
I’ve highlighted a couple of ingredients with some relevant notes. Aside from this, the ingredients needed are pretty basic.
- Baking Chocolate – we used semisweet chocolate (chips or baking bar chopped)
- Heavy Cream – Make sure you use heavy cream, and not milk, as the texture won’t be the same.
Substitutions
Sometimes substitutions are necessary because of ingredients that are unavailable or needed for dietary restrictions. Here are some suggestions that can help:
- Oreos – although we haven’t tried it, we don’t see a reason why you couldn’t use Golden Oreos for this recipe instead, or even other types of cookies.
- Chocolate – you can use milk chocolate chips as well but the mousse will be sweeter overall. Or, you can use a mix of chocolate chips if you wish; such as half semi sweet and half milk chocolate. This is a great way to use any partial bags you may have.
Equipment
We love making small individual cups (we used 6.8 ounce cups) of mousse but you can absolutely make one bowl of this recipe and dish it out in to servings, as needed.
How to Make Oreo Mousse
First, it’s best to make space for the finished mousse cups in your refrigerator, so once you’ve made the mousse, you can place it in to chill right away.

How to Make the Chocolate
STEP 1. Heat cream. Heat ½ Cup of Heavy Cream in the microwave for 40-45 seconds.
STEP 2. Make chocolate. Pour Heated cream over chocolate (Image 2). Let the chocolate and cream sit for 3 minutes before stirring. Once stirred if the chocolate is not melted and smooth, microwave for 15 additional seconds and stir again. Continue to do this until melted. Once smooth, and melted, sit aside to cool (Image 3).
Crushing the Cookies
STEP 3. Make Oreo crumbs. In a food processor finely blend 12 cookies in to fine crumbs. Reserve 1 Tablespoon of crumbs for garnish if desired (Images 4 & 5).
If you have extra, you’ll love sprinkling crushed Oreo crumbs on top of these dirt cupcakes!
STEP 4. Crush cookies. Next place 8 cookies into a ziplock bag and roughly crush into pieces (Images 6 & 7).
How to Make the Mousse
STEP 5. Cream ingredients. Add the remaining cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla to a large mixing bowl and beat until stiff soft peaks form (Images 8 & 9).
STEP 6. Add cookies. Add cookie crumbs into cream mixture and stir until combined. Then remove 1 ½ cups of the cookies and cream mixture to set aside to use as the cream layer when assembling the mousse.
STEP 7. Add melted chocolate. Pour the cooled chocolate from step 2, into the remaining cookie and cream mixture and carefully stir the chocolate into the mixture until fully incorporated.
Layering the Mousse
Tip: For a cleaner look you can pipe the mixtures into the desert cups.
STEP 8. First layer. Fill a small bowl about ⅔ full with chocolate mixture, sprinkle roughly crushed Oreo cookie pieces – about one cookie worth (Images 14 & 15).
STEP 9. Layer 2. Spoon the reserved cookie and cream mixture on top of crushed cookies, if desired sprinkle with reserved cookie crumbs, and top with a whole cookie (Images 16 & 17).
STEP 10. Refrigerate. Refrigerate desserts for at least 3 hours before serving, to allow mousse to set.
Recipe Pro Tips
- Cover with plastic wrap. When chilling in the refrigerator, if you cover with plastic wrap, it will help prevent odors from other foods from seeping in to the mousse.
- Top with whipped cream. Although it’s not necessary, you could add whipped cream to the top of the mousse, especially if your containers are bigger and you need to fill more space in each cup/dish.

Pudding tends to be more dense than mousse and either is cooked or it uses ingredients for thickening, while mousse is more airy.
Mousse originated in France and means “foam” which is a similar texture to mousse.
Storage
To store leftovers, refrigerate in an airtight container or cover with plastic wrap, for about 3-4 days.
